Milk Production Practices Comparison Chart

The difference between milk production practices can be significant. Below is a quick reference guide clarifying many of the major distinctions between Conventional, USDA Organic, and RAW USA dairy practices.

PRODUCTION PRACTICES

CONVENTIONALUSDA CERTIFIED ORGANICBIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE RAW
HTST pasteurizedHTST pasteurized and UHT 282 degrees pasteurizedNever pasteurized or heated above 102 degrees.
HomogenizedHomogenized (few exceptions)Never homogenized
StandardizedStandardizedNever standardized
Additives and preservativesAdditives for butter fat, protein and vitaminsNothing added
HormonesNone permittedNone permitted or needed
AntibioticsNone permittedNone permitted or needed
Zero pastureMay have zero pasture under USDA rulesAlways have access to pasture
Piles of manurePiles of manureNone created due to pasture access
Concrete and steel environmentsConcrete and steel environmentsLittle if any artificial environment
Short life span for cowsLonger life span but may be retired to factory farmLive four times longer or more
Artifical breedingArticial breeding Bull bred naturally
Factory farmedMay be factory farmedSmaller family or sustainable farm operations
GMO feedsNo GMOsNo GMOS
Artificial food byproducts/plasticsAnything as long as it's organic (i.e. organic donuts ok)100% GRASSFED
Unnatural feeds like soy and cotton seedUnnatural feeds as long as certified organic, including soy, etc.100% GRASSFED
Heavy use of pesticidesOnly organic pesticides utilizedNo pesticides used

NUTRITION

CONVENTIONALUSDA ORGANICBIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE RAW
Processing causes lactose intoleranceProcessing causes lactose intoleranceLactose intolerance not a factor
Missing enzymes cause many other digestion challengesMissing enzymes cause many other digestion challengesAll enzymes active
Missing beneficial bacteria weaken the immune systemMissing beneficial bacteria weaken the immune systemBiodiverse living bacteria
Antibiotics create pathogen developmentNo antibiotics permittedNo antibiotics permitted
Antibitoics can cause allergies in sensitive consumersNo antibiotics permittedNo antibiotics permitted
Hormones may increase cancer risk No hormones permittedNo hormones permitted
Poor fatty acid rations omega 3-6Depending on pasture access may have good ratios but may be damaged by processingBeneficial fatty acid ratios maximized by pasture grazing
Zero CLA valuesDepending on pasture access may have good ratios but may be damaged by processingHigh CLA values
HyperallergenicHyperallergenicHypoallergenic

FOOD SAFETY

CONVENTIONALUSDA ORGANICBIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE RAW
Human pathogens present in raw milk 31% of the timePathogens generally not associated with organic raw milkPathogens have never been found in our farmers' samples
Pasteurization destroys safety systemsPasteurization destroys safety systems in raw organic milkNatural safety systems in raw milk destroy pathogens
Large scale creamery contaminations could cause massive foodborne outbreaksLarge scale creamery contaminations could cause massive foodborne outbreaksOutbreak, if it occured, would be contained because of smaller operations
Emerging pathogens created by over use of antibioticsNo emerging pathogens created by antibiotics but may be created by heat-resistant bacteria in factories, and improper use of sanitizersNo emerging pathogens created

HISTORICAL

CONVENTIONALUSDA ORGANICBIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE RAW
System has been designed for economy, compromising natural purity and wholesome qualities of milk Well-intentioned concept has been taken over by factory farms resulting in highly processed mass-market product Uses natural science as the basis for purity and safety. Product remains whole and safe, as nature intended.
Unsafe factory farm practices of the past are now exacerbated due to antibiotics and hormones, high grain, and no pastureAfter factory farm interests took over the USDA organic program, pasture access is no longer requiredNot influenced by factory farming practices. Historic natural methods successfully combined with leading edge testing. Year-round pasture access crucial to operations.
